The good and the bad…and the bad is pretty ugly

June 26, 2008 · 3 Comments

First, The Good: Yesterday we took our annual trip to the Fair. I mentioned to my wife that it seems like a mid-west thing. going to the fair. entering a prize heifer. Growing up I remember going to the LA County Fair every year. it was always hot and crowded.

Here in SD the location is perfect…near the beach in Del Mar, it can be crowded, but we never seem to catch the rush, and last night I went to the awards ceremony for the Home and hobby contest. I already knew about the Blue ribbon, but what I didn’t know is that I won “Best of the Devision.” Apparently the candy devision has 7 categories of candy. Each with it’s own 1st,2nd, and 3rd places. My prize was the best of all the candy entries. Statistically speaking…out of about 20 entries they liked mine the best. small time since there were 128 entries in the cookie devision.

We ducked out a little early because the J-dog was getting a little nutty sitting while there were perfectly good rides to be ridden and chutes to be shot. as we were leaving the woman who presented me with the award made a gesture as if to say, good job, see you next year. now there is some pressure.

A few side notes: We had some fried food, and I “swear” that I will never eat that stuff again. I felt sick for hours afterward. however while we were eating our deep fried hot dog on a stick We watch a young lady bungee jump from a basket that was lifted by a crane. not much out of the norm here till my wife and I looked at each other and said” Did she just loose her top?” So here a tip-for all you bungee jumping ladies that choose to go with a tube top…think again. There was a line of guys a mile long buying that picture and accompanying video.

The Bad: The Padres are currently getting their heinies handed to the them by the American League. the only upside is that the Mariners are coming to town, and my team may have a chance to take a few games. It the Sd in the basement in the NL west and baseball in general, a lot of focus is on Hoffman and his blown saves. granted he put up 2 neat balls in the 9th 2 days ago, but I don’t think he should be made the scapegoat for the dismal season. there are a few bright spots on the team namely Giles and Adrian Gonzalez. both (maybe not as of late) have been hitting well, and Adrian is on a record pace for RBI’s.

I’m not a fair weather fan. I enjoy the game, and I really don’t put a lot of my self worth in my local sports team….no really. I don’t. We’ve had some good years in the past, but I think right now this team is not as good and therefore competitive as most would like. that being said, there is no reason to “Boo” Hoffman at the end of his outing this week. If you want to boo for you hometown team…move to New York or Boston.

While I see your point, I don’t see Boston fans booing against the Sox. What we usually boo are players with large egos who disrespect the fan base (google Foulke and “Johnny from Burger King” ) and/or the game. This is an ancient baseball town with a ton of tradition, the fans have been around before the players and, good or bad, will remain after.

Weird, the smiley above should be the end parenthesis.

No slam against Boston maybe I should have said “LA”

local sports radio sites the hard times that the country is going through. lost jobs foreclosures etc. people need something to believe in, and when they are let down they become dorks. hard times or not, there is no reason for bad behavior.

As disappointing as this season is, there is room for civility. Fans here have never demanded that the team win a World Series, let alone the devision.

Hoffman has served the team well. He “WAS” one of the best closers. if I recall he still has the record for most saves and no one else comes close….but now most batters have his number.
