the nerve

Literally...about 2 weeks ago, I developed a sharp pain in the middle of the ball of my foot. A quick trip to the doctor and he told me as we get older we loose the padding in the bottom of the foot causing pain…a quick Rx and I was out the door in a few minutes. Well the Dr. could not have been more wrong. It turns out that there is plenty of fat on my body to go round. It looks like I have a “neuroma” in my foot. This is a nerve with a growth that puts pressure on the nerve causing the pain that I’m experiencing.

So for the last few weeks I’ve been using an arch support, and have to lace my shoes up extra tight…for some reason this seems to work, and I can walk without a limp.

The next step is a trip to the podiatrist in early November. There are a 2 treatments available…one is a steroid shot to attempt to decrease the size of the growth, or removing the nerve all together leaving me with 2 toes without feeling. Interesting choices, considering that the shots may only bring temporary relief, and I may have to have it removed anyway.

This is the second enigmatic, acute pain that I’ve have had to deal with over the last year. I had a hip pain for about 9 months that the Dr’s and PT’s thought it was anything from a muscle pull to Arthritis. And now this, although they seep pretty sure of themselves, this getting old thing sucks. It seems like my body is breaking down, and I cant stop it….what is next? I wonder.

Time for some changes: I’m not in great physical shape, I walk most every day, but I’m for the most part not developing any stamina, or loosing weight. I could probably eat better and cut back on the sugar. That has always been a struggle for me. I just don’t want to get to the point when I have to have something removed, replaced, or implanted. The plain truth is that I’m getting older, and my body is starting to break down. I want to turn it around.
