Tonight I played with a friend who was diagnosed with cancer earlier this year. In the last 18 months he had problems with his hip and that was where the cancer was found as well as in his lung. The prognosis can go good or bad in the next few weeks. His attitude is matter of fact.
He is a talented player and maker of drums. He is also a gentle man. I don’t think I ever heard speak ill of anyone in the years I’ve known him. His outlook is good, but I can’t help but think about his death. He only lives a mile away, and I’ve only been by to visit him a handful of times. I feel bad for him and his wife that they are going thru this, but I also have a little self pity. I will miss him. I’ve enjoyed his friendship for 10 years now. His insights into music and drums are amazing. Tonight we played together…for perhaps the last time, and it was a great time. He may be frail, but he can still play. I hope to get the opportunity to do it again before this book closes.
